Alternatives to injection moulding

If your component is unsuitable for the injection moulding process, we also have machining capacity for plastic components that are better suited to fabrication by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining or plate cutting services.

CNC machining

Allows for the creation of uniform and precisely manufactured components in both small and high quantities.

Plate cutting

Allows for the production of components, structures and products with a high level of accuracy and efficiency.

V-Spacer
Refrigeration industry

V-Spacer

  • The V-Spacer was designed and engineered for a customer manufacturing insulative panels used in refrigeration.
  • The clever and unusual design came from the requirement that the spacers needed to be tossed into a frame and provide the same dimensions in thickness for the insulation panel, whichever way they landed.
  • V-spacers are made out of Nylon, and we hand-manufactured the prototypes before going into production – bearing in mind this was before the days of 3D printing!

Cam Cleat

  • Cam cleats are widely used in the transport and marine industry, and this product was designed for a transport manufacturer for moving insulated panels in 40-foot trailers.
  • The challenge here was to save on cost as the marine industry version was far too expensive for this application resulting in a redesign.
  • We did this by simplifying the design – removing the roller bearings, cutting back the spring tension and wound length, and reducing tolerances.

  • This item was produced for an automotive client who required a tight tolerance and came to us to produce a low volume tool.
  • Our brief was to accommodate the specific constraints and keep costs as low as possible without compromising quality.
  • The component needed to be backlit whilst also fitting a very specific size and clarity which is why we chose polycarbonate as the material.

Anchor stud socket

  • We produced this item for a client within the railway industry – they needed a product to insulate stainless steel studs from concrete sleepers.
  • They only required a small quantity so we made the mouldings using a semi-automatic process to keep costs down.
  • We created the design with a ribbed outside to key into the concrete, whilst internally threading at 24mm to accept the metal studs.

We’ve got quite a few options - Nylon, Polypropylene, PVDF, Acetal, Polyethylene, and Polycarbonate. Not sure which one’s best? No problem, just tell us what you need it to do and we’ll help you pick the right one.

It depends what you’re after. If it’s a one-off or a prototype, CNC machining or plate cutting works well. For injection moulding, you’ll usually need a bigger batch. We’ll chat through what makes sense for your project.
